Every 5 years the Resuscitation Council UK reviews learning outcomes and practical skills required in all first aid qualifications. In this review there are a number of vital updates to the practical’s and knowledge taught in the Paediatric First Aid Qualifications.
The evidence gathered by the resuscitation council over the last few years have prompted the changes. The Resuscitation Council indicate that:
"Developed over four years through a global evidence review led by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the guidelines have been adapted for the UK in partnership with the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), following a development process aligned with NICE standards. They reflect the latest international research and have been shaped by insights from clinicians, educators, members of the public, and cardiac arrest survivors."
Professor Gavin Perkins MBE, President of RCUK, said: “These guidelines are the result of years of rigorous review and collaboration. They offer clear, practical guidance to help healthcare professionals make timely, informed decisions, ensuring that people receive the best possible care when it matters most.”
We already include many of the changes, as standard within our current teaching of Paediatric First Aid training, and have done for many years ,meaning everyone has already been taught many of the changes included within this review.
There is NO need to up date those who have a current in date Paediatric First Aid qualification. All First Aid certificates are valid until the expiry date indicated on their certificate.
From January 2026 all our Peadiatric First Aid training courses will include ALL updated pratical skills with full assessments starting from 1.2.26.
An overview of the updates include:
1. Ratio of compressions and rescue breaths for Paediatric First Aid
2. Hand positions for baby CPR
3. Placement of AED pads for a child casualty
4. A new section focused on bystander response, with updated guidance for emergencies including bleeding, choking, - Ones we have always emphasised on all our paediatric first aid
