Medicines administration in schools

Whilst some pupils will have long-term and complex medical conditions or carry their own medication (for example, an inhaler for asthma or adrenaline for intramuscular use in anaphylaxis)

Some pupils may need to have access to life saving prescription drugs in an emergency, the details will be recorded in the pupil’s individual health care plan and identified staff members will be aware of what to do.

DfE Automated External Defibrillators  (AEDs)  Guidance for schools (December 2023 DfE)

Guidance for schools (December 2023 DfE)

KEY POINTS:

The Department for Education (DfE) is providing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs or ‘defibrillators’) to state-funded schools in England where existing provision is not in place.

By the end of the 2022/23 academic year, the DfE expect all schools in England to have access to a defibrillator.

Cardiac arrest can affect people of any age and without warning. If this happens, swift action is vital, and you must call 999 immediately for an ambulance.

While the ambulance crew are on their way, early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and prompt defibrillation can help save a person’s life.

For schools that would like assistance with purchasing additional defibrillators, the Department for Education has negotiated an arrangement with NHS Supply Chain to enable the purchase of defibrillators which meet a certain minimum specification at a discount. Further details can be found in the ‘Purchasing a defibrillator’ section.
